# Electricity Authority

## Overview

- Year: 2026
- Type: Accessibility, WCAG Audit
- Built with: WCAG 2.2 Level AA, Accessibility Audit
- Live site: https://www.ea.govt.nz

## What We Did

The Electricity Authority Te Mana Hiko, the Crown entity that regulates New Zealand's electricity market, needed to know how their website measured up against the New Zealand Web Accessibility Standard. We carried out a full WCAG 2.2 Level AA accessibility audit of ea.govt.nz, a site of more than 4,000 pages. The result is a report their team can act on. It records the site's conformance criterion by criterion, sets out each issue with a severity rating and a code-level fix, and gives their developers a clear order to work through.

## What The Audit Covers

- Every unique page template across the site, from the homepage to legislation, consultation, news, and dataset pages
- Every WCAG 2.2 Level A and AA success criterion, mapped to the New Zealand Web Accessibility Standard 1.2
- The six criteria new to WCAG 2.2: Consistent Help, Redundant Entry, Focus Not Obscured, Dragging Movements, Target Size, and Accessible Authentication
- Colour contrast for body text, headings, and non-text elements such as icons, buttons, and form fields
- Keyboard operability, logical focus order, and a visible focus indicator on every interactive element
- Screen reader testing with VoiceOver and NVDA, covering reading order, announcements, and ARIA usage
- Heading hierarchy, landmark regions, page titles, and document language
- Forms checked for labels, instructions, error identification, and error suggestions
- Reflow, 200% text resize, and text spacing, checked for any loss of content or function
- Target size, pointer gestures, and dragging alternatives for touch and motor accessibility
- Alternative text for images and accessible names for every button and link
- A conformance statement for each success criterion, marked pass, fail, or not applicable, with an overall result
- A prioritised findings list, each with a severity rating, the WCAG reference, a plain explanation, a screenshot, and a code-level fix
- An executive summary for stakeholders and a remediation roadmap for the development team

## Result

A complete view of where ea.govt.nz stands against WCAG 2.2 Level AA, criterion by criterion, with a prioritised roadmap that turns thousands of pages of issues into a focused set of template-level fixes.
